Siteground Hosting Review – Updated (2020)

siteground hosting reviewSiteGround (www.siteground.com) is a specialised web hosting company that has been operating since 2004.

If you haven’t heard of them or are trying to decide which hosting service to use, we have dug around under the bonnet of everything SiteGround offers and pulled together some of their key features.

Siteground Hosting Review – Summary

Firstly, is SiteGround any good? And is it any better or different than other hosting services like the popular Bluehost?

If you are the sort of person that likes to jump straight to the answer, SiteGround provides an excellent hosting service that is particularly suited to medium to larger users and those wanting to host WordPress and WooCommerce sites.

But if you are looking to host a single website with low levels of traffic and don’t need high levels of customer support, there are cheaper options available.

If you want to find out a bit more about what SiteGround offers, keep reading! We have tried to keep this as short and as easy to follow as possible.

Who is SiteGround and how long has it been around?

SiteGround was originally launched by a bunch of university students from Bulgaria. Today, it is a holding of companies registered in the USA, UK, Bulgaria, and Spain that manages four offices and several data centre locations around the world.

Over the past 15+ years, SiteGround has grown steadily, and is now a hosting provider for over 2 million domains, with over 500 employees working in a variety of locations around the world.

What does SiteGround do well?

SiteGround has a strong focus on speed, service, and customer support.

Their uptime is one of the best on the market. They promise to deliver over 99.9% uptime and will pay you if they don’t. Most providers worth their weight will provide at least 99.9% uptime. Some offer 99.0% but we do not recommend this. Any downtime that can be avoided, should be avoided.

They also have a 30-day refund guarantee.

Customer support service is an area where SiteGround really shines. They offer a 24/7 help desk, 365 days of the year along with a stack of high-quality tutorials and guides.

And they claim that their systems and procedures mean they can resolve most user issues in under 5 minutes. This is great if your website is facing a critical problem or you are working late at night and don’t want to wait until standard business hours for a response.

Client testimonials and reviews appear to back-up their claims.

SiteGround is one of only three hosting services recommended by WordPress (the others being Bluehost and Dreamhost).

And there are several reasons why WordPress love it:

  • It has tools that make managing WordPress sites easy: one-click install, managed updates, WP-Cli, WordPress staging and git integration.
  • Its support team with advanced WordPress expertise is available 24/7.
  • They have invested a lot in providing the latest speed technologies that make WordPress load faster: NGINX-based caching, SSD-drives, PHP 7, CDN, HTTP/2.
  • They proactively protect WordPress sites from hacks.

What plans does SiteGround offer and how much do they cost?

SiteGround offers three shared hosting plans, one of which will suit the needs of most users.

All their plans offer the following features as standard:

  • Unmetered traffic – so, they don’t limit the traffic that your website can receive
  • Unlimited and free email
  • Free SSL
  • Servers in America, Asia, Australia and Europe and an Australian database
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • SSD disks with their own caching system
  • 24-hour phone, chat, and email support
  • 100% renewable energy match.

Review Of Other benefits and features of SiteGround

SiteGround offers several other features and benefits, including:

  • Easy to use tools to help you build your site from scratch. Or you can easily manage sites built on the most popular Content Management Systems such as Joomla, Magento, WordPress, Drupal, ZenCart, and more.
  • For clients wanting to migrate a WordPress site to SiteGround, they offer a free WordPress Migration plugin. Or you can pay one of their migration experts to do it for you, with prices starting from as little as AUD$30 per site.
  • Managing the security of sites at server and application level. They offer free Let’s Encrypt SSL that keeps your data safe along with daily backups, and for their GrowBig and GoGeek plans, on-demand backup copies.
  • You can manage both your domain and site in the same place. SiteGround also offers affordable domain registration and transfer services, a user-friendly domain management panel, and DNS services (plus more).
  • A range of advanced features that most other hosting providers don’t provide. Such as staging, Git repositories, free integrations with CloudFlare or Let’sEnrcypt (SSL).
  • Their backend is intuitive and easy to follow. You can also adapt and customise it to suit your needs (for example, you can choose not to show some sections).
  • You can create as many databases as you want. The maximum size for each database is limited to 500 MB for the StartUp plan, 750 MB for GrowBig, and 1,000 MB for GoGeek.

What are the downsides?

There are three main areas where SiteGround may still be good but is not the ‘best in show’.

Price – the SiteGround prices aren’t the cheapest in the market but they still represent value for money, particularly when you consider some of the added benefits you get with their higher-level plans.

They don’t provide a free domain, so you will have to pay for this separately.

Limited web disk space (10 GB for their StartUp plan versus 50 GB for Bluehost’s Basic plan).

These ‘cons’ are relatively minor when you balance them against the excellence of SiteGround’s customer service, speed, reliability, and the enhanced features offered as part of their advanced plans.

Based on our review of Siteground hosting, we highly recommend SiteGround as an excellent choice of hosting provider for everyone but those users looking for the cheapest hosting option for their low-traffic website.
